Asus eeePC X101 with OSX Snow Leopard 10.6 - 10.6.6

The next step was with my original retail DVD of Snow Leopard. Of course it wouldn't boot, I had expected that. However, I was quite surprised when it even did not boot with the help of iBoot or EFI Empire because I wasn't able to switch the discs - "F5" just didn't work. Finally I managed to start the installation by dividing the task to an external HD with an image of the DVD and OSX86ModCD from the external DVD-drive.

To tell it right away - it was not a real successful installation: The resolution stayed at 800x600 thru the whole process and I was not  able to get a higher res up to now (v10.6.7). But that's not the worst - wifi isn't working either.

At least the system is booting from scratch thanks to OSX86ModCD. The N455 is recognized falsely as an Intel Core Solo. RAM is correctly shown. Audio is not working as far as I can tell. However, Ethernet is working (Atheros L1) but you'll lose the mouse - it is jumping around like a pinball after you connected Ethernet. Right now I am updating via ethernet to 10.6.8 but actually I have no hope anything will change after that.

It's the kernel that's for sure. That's why I am going to try either Lion or a manipulated kernel next.

Asus eeePC X101 with OS X 10.6.5

Bei meinem nächsten Versuch nahm ich meine Original-DVD zur Hand. Überraschenderweise ließ sie sich trotz Hilfsmittel wie iBoot oder EFI Empire nicht booten - die "F5"-Taste bewirkte rein gar nichts, also konnte ich die Disk nicht tauschen. Zuguterletzt probierte ich es mit einer externen HD, auf die ich zuerst ein Image der Installations-DVD schob und OSX86ModCD vom externen DVD-Laufwerk.

Um es kurz zu machen: Die Auflösung von 800x600, die ich am Anfang des Installationsprozesses angezeigt bekam, blieb leider bis zuletzt (bis 10.6.7) bestehen. Aber das war noch nicht einmal das Schlimmste, denn das WLAN-Modul wurde nicht erkannt.

Wenigstens bootete das Image sofort mit OSX86ModCD, wobei die N455 CPU allerdings fälschlicherweise als Intel Core Solo gesehen wird. Das RAM ist allerdings korrekt als DDR3 dargestellt. Audio funktioniert nicht, soweit ich feststellen kann 8oder aber es muss unhörbar leise sein). Ethernet funktioniert korrekt (Atheros L1-Chip), aber es stellte sich sofort nach der Verbindung ein bizarres Phänomen ein: Die Maus zickt seither rum und springt bei Berührung enervierend durch den Bildschirm. (Wobei so eine Art Echo-Effekt eintritt und man das Gefühl bekommt, der Echo-Zeiger hätte die korrekte Auflösung von 1024x600 ...) 

Das Update auf 10.6.8 via Ethernet führte dazu, dass das System seitdem gar nicht mehr startet. drei Stunden Arbeit sind also für die Katz gewesen. (Was sie aber ohne WLAN und richtiger Auflösung sowieso war.)

Ich denke, ich brauche ein passenden Kernel für das X101.

Merry Xmas 2011 to all Hackintosh netbook users. During the next days I will try to make another effort to get OSX running on the Asus X101. Stay tuned.

Another netbook with N455 CPU and OS X 10.6.7

While still doing some research I found another netbook with an Intel N455 CPU that obviously is capable of running OS X (10.6.7). The owner is claiming a partly working installation: only ethernet and wifi seem to be creating some problems. However, at least the wifi problem could be solved by replacing it with a fitting Atheros or Broadcom wifi card. Missing ethernet is no real issue looking at the Lenovo S10e for example.

This means, in principle you can install OS X on a N455 system. The mentioned netbook is a HP Mini 110 and there is a detailed tutorial available in English.

Gelegentlich recherchiere ich im Netz nach Netbooks mit einer Intel N455 CPU. Vor kurzem entdeckte ich ein HP Mini 110 mit dieser CPU, auf der der Besitzer angeblich den Snow Leopard V10.6.7 installieren konnte - wenn auch ohne funktionierendes WLAN und Ethernet. Letzteres erscheint durchaus verzichtbar, wenn man sich am Lenovo S10e orientiert, schließlich ist ein Netbook ja in erster Linie für den mobilen Einsatz gedacht. Die WLAN-Karte sollte problemlos ersetzbar sein durch ein von OS X unterstütztes Modell wie Atheros oder Broadcom.

im Prinzip ist es also möglich, OS X auf einem N455-System zu installieren. Eine mehr oder weniger ausführliche Anleitung zum HP Mini findet sich hier, allerdings nur auf Englisch.

Google CR-48 running OS X Snow Leopard

One of the Google laptops that are supposed to run Chrome OS has the capability to run other OS, too: The CR-48 - and it has an Intel N455 CPU. Since it can run OS X Snow Leopard after some minor modifications this means in principle that any other computer with that CPU and the GMA3150 should be also - like the Asus eeePC X101.

Eins der beiden in 2010 erschienen Google Notebooks hat die gleiche CPU und die Grafikeinheit eines Asus X101: eine Atom N455 mit GMA3150, Ein User hat bereits erfolgreich den Schneeleoparden installiert (wobei die Grafik ein wenig langsam ist). Im Prinzip ist es also möglich, OS X auf jedem Computer mit dieser Hardware zu installieren.

OS X distributions on / OS X-Distributionen auf / Asus eeePC X101H

My first trials with the Asus eeePC X101(H) had no happy ending. The system just wouldn't boot though I transferred everything to an USB drive with 16 GB. I will give it a new try when my friend provides me with that netbook for some days since it just makes no sense to carry around with me all the ingredients that might be needed. Last time for example I didn't have an external HD or NBI (Netbook installer) with me and there was no internet connection for downloading it.

Meine ersten Versuche mit dem Asus eeePC X101H sind nicht besonders gelungen. man könnte auch sagen: sie scheiterten, auch wenn ich das OS sogar über einen 16GB USB-Stick versuchte zu booten. Das muss jedoch nichts heißen, denn das ist keine Verifikation dafür, dass OS X nicht auf dem X101 lauffähig wäre. Viele Tools hatte ich bei dem Versuch gar nicht zur Verfügung wie z.B. eine externe Festplatte oder den NBI (Netbook Installer). Ich werde weitere Experimente machen, sobald die Freundin mir ihr Netbook für ein paar Tage überläßt.

Anyway, one should not neglect other possibilities like different distributions of an OS X though I really do not recommend using them out of security reasons. However, this mentioned possibility might be interesting just because of research - if a distribution works this means that an original OS X should be working, too. Just keep in mind that an OS X Lion is only 24,- Euros. That should be affordable for everybody.

Wie dem auch sei, man sollte aber auch nicht andere Möglichkeiten ausser Acht lassen wie bspw. andere Distributionen, obwohl ich das allein schon aus Sicherheitsgründen nicht empfehle. Allerdings könnten die Erkenntnisse aus rein forschungspolitischen Gründen wichtig sein, denn: Wenn eine Distri auf dem X101 laufen sollte, bedeutet das automatisch, dass ein originales OS X grundsätzlich lauffähig sein muss. Dann fehlen womöglich lediglich ein paar kexts, die man nachträglich einbauen könnte. OS X Lion kostet lächerliche 24,- Euro - das kann sich dann wohl wirklich jeder leisten, und mit dem Original ist man immer auf der sicheren Seite.

A lot of people don't understand why OS X may not work on their netbook though they've seen it on the net (or read what others wrote about that). Most tutorials lack detailed information about the installation process because the author doesn't mention some (easy) steps thinking that everybody would think of.

Since netbooks come without without a DVD drive you have to connect an external drive. But it is quite often that the installation DVD would not work. This is because it is too slow or the data are not complete because of reading errors.

To avoid such problems it is much better to copy the DVD to a USB drive and plug that into the netbook while booting. To do so you just copy the disc with Disk Utility (on a real Mac) to the USB drive by making an image of the DVD before. You'll see how things change all of a sudden.

Viele User sind irritiert, wenn ihr Installationsversuch von OS X auf ihrem Netbook nicht funktioniert, obwohl sie anderslautende Informationen aus dem Internet haben. Das liegt zum Teil an Kleinigkeiten: Viele Anleitungen sind wenig detailliert, weil die Autoren viele Dinge für selbstverständlich halten, auf die andere, insbesondere Anfänger - niemals kämen.

Beispielsweise haben Netbook kein eigenes DVD-Laufwerk, also wird ein externes angeschlossen, das vielleicht nicht das gewünschte Ergebnis liefert, weil es entweder zu langsam ist oder vielleicht Lesefehler überträgt. Daher ist es grundsätzlich sinnvoller, die Daten auf einen (schnellen) USB-Speicherstick mithilfe vom "Festplatten-Dienstprogramm" auf einem echten Mac zu übertragen. Dazu muss man lediglich ein Image von der Installations-DVD herstellen und dieses auf den Stick kopieren. Plötzlich funktioniert meistens nämlich alles. Nebenbei bemerkt, ist der Speicherstick auch deutlich schneller als ein Laufwerk ...

OS X on netbooks with Intel Atom N455 and GMA3150 graphics

Since the original task is to set up an Asus eeePC X101H with OS X I had a look around. Like the first generation of netbooks most of those today have similar ingredients. So all in all you need to find a netbook that was successfully hackintoshed. For example the Dell Mini 1012 (that has a N450 CPU) or an Acer Aspire One D255E (with N455 CPU) or a HP Mini 210-1191NR (with N455 CPU and GMA3150). 

I guess, if I can find a Hackintosh with exact the same configurations it is highly likely that the X101H will also run OS X.

Da das eigentliche Ziel nach wie vor ist, einen eeePC X101H mit OS X aufzusetzen, habe ich mich etwas im Netz umgesehen. Die erste Generation von Netbooks hatte bekanntlich nahezu baugleiche Hardware, so dass man davon ausgehen kann, dass auch die jetzige Generation sich innerlich weitestgehend kaum unterscheidet. Man muss also letztendlich nur ein Hackintosh-Netbook finden, das die gleichen Hauptbestandteile hat - wie bspw. das an Acer Aspire One D255E (mit N455 CPU) oder einem HP Mini 210-1191NR (mit N455 CPU und GMA3150).

Die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass OSX auf einem solch bereits gehackten Netbook läuft, müsste sehr groß sein.

OS X on netbooks

Since I own a Lenovo S10e - which I actually bought because in 2008 Apple did not produce any netbooks and publicly denied any plans to produce them - and was able to install Snow Leopard 10.6 I was quite lucky first to transform the nice device into a "Mac". Actually I was willing to pay up to 700 Euros for an Apple netbook (so twice as much as for the S10e) but hey, if Apple didn't want my money ... In the beginning there were some minor problems like non-working ethernet and missing sleep function. At least I had no problems with wifi. And then Apple manipulated OS X so that any update beyond 10.6.1 would disable OS X on the machine.

But meanwhile thanks to some Russian coder this barrier was removed and with the help of some kexts sleep works now. The only thing not working yet is still ethernet (though I have to admit I didn't follow the development anymore).

My Lenovo S10e named "Mac Air"

In 2008 kaufte ich mir ein Lenovo S10e, weil ich unbedingt ein Netbook haben wollte. Undzwar eines, auf dem möglichst OS X laufen würde. Ich hätte damals auch problemlos bis zu 700 Euro bezahlt (also doppelt so viel wie ich letztendlich für das S10e hinlegte), aber Apple kündigte schließlich an, man werde kein Netbook produzieren, nachdem man vorher gesagt hatte, man wolle den "Markt beobachten".

Dank der vielen bekannten und unbekannten Helfer im Netz gelang mir schließlich die Installation von Snow Leopard, auch wenn anfangs kleinere Probleme vorhanden waren: Ethernet und Sleep funktionierten partout nicht. Immerhin hatte ich keine Probleme mit WLAN im Gegensatz zu anderen.

Nachdem Apples fiese Manipulation von OS X 10.6.2 Dank eines russischen Programmierers neutralisiert werden konnte und einige kexts verfügbar waren, läuft das Lenovo Netbook derzeit schon bei 10.6.5 inklusive Sleep. Vielleicht ginge jetzt sogar das Ethernet, aber ich habe die weitere Entwicklung nicht mehr verfolgt.

However, after my girlfriend bought an Asus eeePC X101 she asked me if I could manage to install OS X for her. Since there are so many netbooks available now it is hard to find how-to's. People just make no efforts anymore to try or tell others how they managed (or failed) to install SL or even Lion.

That's why I will start to collect the information in the net and also to report on my efforts to transform the eeePC X101 into a Mac.

Successfully installed: OS X 10.6.0 on Lenovo S10e

Wie dem auch sei, nachdem meine Freundin ein Asus eeePC X101 gekauft hat, fragte sie mich, ob ich nicht OS X darauf zum Laufen bringen könnte. Dummerweise ist der Markt für Netbooks nicht nur gesättigt, es gibt mittlerweile einfach auch schon zuviele verschiedene Modelle, so dass sich kaum noch jemand die Mühe macht, entweder OS X auf allen zu installieren oder aber zu publizieren, wie er/sie das geschafft hat.

Deswegen habe ich mich dazu entschlossen, entsprechende Infos hier zusammen zu tragen und ab heute von meinen Bemühungen zu berichten, das X101 in einen Mac zu verwandeln.
