Recommendation: Do NOT buy an Asus EeePC X101h

Just a recommendation: Don't buy an Asus X101h or any other netbook with a graphic chip GMA3150.

Yes, in the end I managed to install OS X on the X101h of my friend but it is not possible to have a fitting kext for that low Intel graphics unit. Instead it is only usable with a patched GMA950 driver - however, you can't watch videos on Mr. Greedy Google's Youtube since QE/CI does not work.

Actually I recommend to stay away from all netbooks that have GMA3150 graphics. It's just not worth the efforts. Instead buy an iPad or other tablet.

Eine kleine Empfehlung an dieser Stelle: Kauft kein Asus X101h (oder irgendein anderes Netbook mit GMA 3150 Grafik). In der Tat ist es mir zwar gelungen, OS X auf dem Gerät zu installieren, aber es gibt einfach keinen echten Treiber für die Grafikeinheit. Die volle Auflösung von 1024x600 ist ausschließlich mit dem gepatchten Treiber von NBI für den GMA 950 möglich, aber man hat dann immer noch keine Hardwarebeschleunigung durch QE/CI - was bedeutet, dass man z.B. auf Youtube des Datenkraken und Big Brother Google keine Videos sehen kann und nur Audio hat.

Ein Netbook mit GMA 3150 ist grundsätzlich abzulehnen. Kauft stattdessen lieber ein Tablet.

Announcement: Google's business policy

I had read a lot of postings about the way Google does business and now I made my own experience with that company:

To get something out of my work here and there I became a so called "publisher" with Google by letting them place ads on my blogs. But what a surprise! The moment the revenue got to the limit of $100 (or 70 Euros) Mr. Google "found" something "irregular" on my blogs - just like other publishers already had experienced. It seems, Mr. Google always finds a way not to pay for the ads placed. Of course, they said they had "refunded the fees to the advertised companies". Of course.

Well, in my opinion the FTC should have a closer look into the business practises of Google and especially the "refunds".

However, one thing is clear: Without us bloggers Google has no content and without content they can't place ads. And they make money with ads.

That's why I probably won't go on with my work here.

Installation only with OS X 10.6.3 retail

The trackpad problem (and a lot others) are solved:

Since NBI and iBoot Legacy 2.7.2 are the only bootloaders yet to work I gave it a new try with a retail DVD of SL 10.6.3 and suddendly the mouse/trackpad is working properly. Now I will try to get the rest working, i.e. Audio, Wifi, Ethernet and microphone. One thing appears to be clear by now: the full resolution of 1024x600 is only possible with NBI's patched GMA 950 kext so therefore a bootloader other than NBI will not work.

Offensichtlich lag es an der Original DVD von 10.6, denn die Retailversion von 10.6.3 hat diese Probleme nicht, wenn man sie mit NBI oder iBoot Legacy bootet/installiert. Momentan habe ich die Installationsprozedur zuerst mit iBoot Legyca 2.7.2 durchgeführt, da damit das Ethernet sofort erkannt wird. Wegen der Auflösung werde ich danach den Bootloader von/mit NBI installieren, da er einen gepatchten GMA 950 kext verwendet.

Asus eeePC X101 with OSX Snow Leopard 10.6 - 10.6.6

The next step was with my original retail DVD of Snow Leopard. Of course it wouldn't boot, I had expected that. However, I was quite surprised when it even did not boot with the help of iBoot or EFI Empire because I wasn't able to switch the discs - "F5" just didn't work. Finally I managed to start the installation by dividing the task to an external HD with an image of the DVD and OSX86ModCD from the external DVD-drive.

To tell it right away - it was not a real successful installation: The resolution stayed at 800x600 thru the whole process and I was not  able to get a higher res up to now (v10.6.7). But that's not the worst - wifi isn't working either.

At least the system is booting from scratch thanks to OSX86ModCD. The N455 is recognized falsely as an Intel Core Solo. RAM is correctly shown. Audio is not working as far as I can tell. However, Ethernet is working (Atheros L1) but you'll lose the mouse - it is jumping around like a pinball after you connected Ethernet. Right now I am updating via ethernet to 10.6.8 but actually I have no hope anything will change after that.

It's the kernel that's for sure. That's why I am going to try either Lion or a manipulated kernel next.

Asus eeePC X101 with OS X 10.6.5

Bei meinem nächsten Versuch nahm ich meine Original-DVD zur Hand. Überraschenderweise ließ sie sich trotz Hilfsmittel wie iBoot oder EFI Empire nicht booten - die "F5"-Taste bewirkte rein gar nichts, also konnte ich die Disk nicht tauschen. Zuguterletzt probierte ich es mit einer externen HD, auf die ich zuerst ein Image der Installations-DVD schob und OSX86ModCD vom externen DVD-Laufwerk.

Um es kurz zu machen: Die Auflösung von 800x600, die ich am Anfang des Installationsprozesses angezeigt bekam, blieb leider bis zuletzt (bis 10.6.7) bestehen. Aber das war noch nicht einmal das Schlimmste, denn das WLAN-Modul wurde nicht erkannt.

Wenigstens bootete das Image sofort mit OSX86ModCD, wobei die N455 CPU allerdings fälschlicherweise als Intel Core Solo gesehen wird. Das RAM ist allerdings korrekt als DDR3 dargestellt. Audio funktioniert nicht, soweit ich feststellen kann 8oder aber es muss unhörbar leise sein). Ethernet funktioniert korrekt (Atheros L1-Chip), aber es stellte sich sofort nach der Verbindung ein bizarres Phänomen ein: Die Maus zickt seither rum und springt bei Berührung enervierend durch den Bildschirm. (Wobei so eine Art Echo-Effekt eintritt und man das Gefühl bekommt, der Echo-Zeiger hätte die korrekte Auflösung von 1024x600 ...) 

Das Update auf 10.6.8 via Ethernet führte dazu, dass das System seitdem gar nicht mehr startet. drei Stunden Arbeit sind also für die Katz gewesen. (Was sie aber ohne WLAN und richtiger Auflösung sowieso war.)

Ich denke, ich brauche ein passenden Kernel für das X101.

Merry Xmas 2011 to all Hackintosh netbook users. During the next days I will try to make another effort to get OSX running on the Asus X101. Stay tuned.

Another netbook with N455 CPU and OS X 10.6.7

While still doing some research I found another netbook with an Intel N455 CPU that obviously is capable of running OS X (10.6.7). The owner is claiming a partly working installation: only ethernet and wifi seem to be creating some problems. However, at least the wifi problem could be solved by replacing it with a fitting Atheros or Broadcom wifi card. Missing ethernet is no real issue looking at the Lenovo S10e for example.

This means, in principle you can install OS X on a N455 system. The mentioned netbook is a HP Mini 110 and there is a detailed tutorial available in English.

Gelegentlich recherchiere ich im Netz nach Netbooks mit einer Intel N455 CPU. Vor kurzem entdeckte ich ein HP Mini 110 mit dieser CPU, auf der der Besitzer angeblich den Snow Leopard V10.6.7 installieren konnte - wenn auch ohne funktionierendes WLAN und Ethernet. Letzteres erscheint durchaus verzichtbar, wenn man sich am Lenovo S10e orientiert, schließlich ist ein Netbook ja in erster Linie für den mobilen Einsatz gedacht. Die WLAN-Karte sollte problemlos ersetzbar sein durch ein von OS X unterstütztes Modell wie Atheros oder Broadcom.

im Prinzip ist es also möglich, OS X auf einem N455-System zu installieren. Eine mehr oder weniger ausführliche Anleitung zum HP Mini findet sich hier, allerdings nur auf Englisch.

Google CR-48 running OS X Snow Leopard

One of the Google laptops that are supposed to run Chrome OS has the capability to run other OS, too: The CR-48 - and it has an Intel N455 CPU. Since it can run OS X Snow Leopard after some minor modifications this means in principle that any other computer with that CPU and the GMA3150 should be also - like the Asus eeePC X101.

Eins der beiden in 2010 erschienen Google Notebooks hat die gleiche CPU und die Grafikeinheit eines Asus X101: eine Atom N455 mit GMA3150, Ein User hat bereits erfolgreich den Schneeleoparden installiert (wobei die Grafik ein wenig langsam ist). Im Prinzip ist es also möglich, OS X auf jedem Computer mit dieser Hardware zu installieren.
